Nearly 800 civilians have fled Sri Lanka’s shrinking war zone in the last day as the army bears down on the last strongholds of separatist Tamil Tigers, the military said on Wednesday.

Troops are marching to the port of Mullaittivu across a small wedge of northeastern Sri Lanka still held by the Tigers, where aid groups say about 230,000 people are trapped in an area of no more than 330 square km (127 square miles).

“In the last 24 hours, 796 people have come out of the war zone,” military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said. They have been provided with basic facilities and food, and will either be sent to the army-held Jaffna Peninsula or south to Vavuniya, site of the army’s rear headquarters for the war, he said. At least 1,000 civilians have fled this week.

Rights groups accuse the Tigers of holding Tamils hostage in the war zone as human shields, forced conscripts and labourers.

The military in the last two weeks seized two major strategic targets, the rebels’ self-proclaimed capital of Kilinochchi and Elephant Pass, which puts all of Jaffna under their control for the first time since 2000.

After those two major blows, the army has turned all units toward Mullaittivu, surging through a jungle where analysts estimate the Tigers have about 2,000 hardcore fighters left.

he Tigers are on U.S., E.U. and Indian terrorism lists after carrying out hundreds of assassinations and suicide bombings, including against Tamils who challenged them.

THE STARTLING recovery of a fleet of one hundred and twenty-five boats belonging to Sea tigers and LTTE organization from CHUNDIKULAM area points to the fact that the entire coastal area between CHUNDIKULAM and MUHAMALAI on the eastern coast has been extensively utilized by Sea Tigers for their clandestine operations including the smuggle of arms and ammunitions, transport of Sea Tigers and various other terrorists operations. vp_pa_tc_0715Even as it is suffering serious blows inflicted by the Sri Lankan armed forces and the ground beneath its feet shrinks by the day, the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) appears to be gripped by a serious internal crisis.

If Sri Lankan intelligence is to be believed, all has not been well between the two most powerful men in the LTTE – leader Velupillai Prabhakaran and intelligence chief, Shanmugalingam Sivashankar, better known as Pottu Amman.

According to reports in the Sri Lankan media, Prabhakaran removed Pottu Amman as the chief of the LTTE’s intelligence wing a few months ago for his repeated failure to carry out several high-profile assassination missions, including the suicide attacks on Sri Lankan army chief Sarath Fonseka and Defense Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa in 2007. According to the Daily Mirror, Pottu Amman was sent away to Muhamalai in the Jaffna Peninsula for three months. The Mirror reports that Pottu Amman has been replaced by Rutnam Master, who was previously in charge of Prabhakaran’s personal security as well as head of the LTTE’s special forces, the Radha Regiment.
While the story could be a fictitious one floated by the Sri Lankan intelligence, if true, it is a major development, with implications that could cripple the already limping Tigers. Rivalries are known to exist in the “monolithic” LTTE. But a split between Prabhakaran and his intelligence chief could prove deadly, damaging the organization far more than the string of military reverses it has suffered over the past couple of years.  Continue Reading »

The victory at Kilinochchi has brought to a close 500 years of imperialist domination and servitude, and the beginning of a new era where we can say proudly that the vista of our past glories have come again to guide nurture and inspire our nation on this new road.

As a starting point the valiant armed forces have to be “Worshipped To A Man” for heralding this victory. It is nothing but right to confer the highest honours on them and enact special legislation to ensure that they are looked after for life. The energy and forces generated are incalculable and this awaits the collective wisdom of the nation to channelise in new directions and perspectives.

In this journey Sri Lanka will face many obstacles but by the determination and the will of our people these will be swept aside. In doing this, anti-national and anti-social forces against the body politic should be relentlessly pursued and destroyed without compunction. Our laws have been fashioned by the imperialists to serve their aspirations. We should refashion our laws to reflect and represent the culture and values of our people. Continue Reading »

Political Bureau member Brinda Karat on Sunday said that her party’s concern about the plight of the Sri Lankan Tamils should not be misused by any force to support the outlawed LTTE.

“The CPI (M) is extremely concerned about the safety and security of Tamil population in Sri Lanka”.

However, the party would not like this concern to be misused by any force to support LTTE,” she told reporters here.

Tamils in Sri Lanka and the LTTE cannot be “equated,” she said, asking the UPA Government to take measures to protect the lives of innocent Tamils. Continue Reading »

With the security forces closing in on the uncleared areas in the North,   TMVP leader Vinayagamurthy Muralitharan alias Karuna Amman yesterday said there would be a possibility of secondary level LTTE leaders leaving the organization and surrendering to the military in the future.

However, he ruled out the possibility of those in the LTTE hierarchy such as Susai, Bhanu and P. Nadesan doing so.

Mr. Muralitharan, the one time LTTE commander for the Eastern Province, told the Daily Mirror that the minor cadres had already started leaving the organization by throwing away their weapons.

“The fall of Mullaitivu is now imminent. After its fall, the LTTE will be holed up in their jungle pockets.  Now, they have a territory which is only 40 square kilometres in extent. All heavy weapons and other war infrastructures are installed in it now,” he said. Continue Reading »
